 Sailing tours from Monnickendam.Monnickendam is a beautiful city with a rich history. The name of the town comes from the Frisian arbentijnse monks who nearly 700 years ago founded their monastery. In order to drain the land for more food production, they will curb plots, hence the name Monnickendam. In 12 century Monnickendam rights granted city by the Dutch Duke William, Duke of Bavaria. The first church was built, containing the oldest carillon in the Netherlands, to this day. Monnickendam was a stone throw away a city wall with four gates, and the outlines of which are parts still visible. Around the 17th century, Monnickendam builds a cheese factory, including a house of Weights and Measures, hereinafter, the Waegh. During the Inquisition, these scales used to the weight of dark-haired women to check to see if she was not a witch. These time scales have survived.
